We call it a life-dominating issue. It touches the deep core of our being and our beliefs. It colors all of life. It insinuates itself into every day, every relationship, and every aspect of living. And ultimately, it compels you to accommodate it in one of three ways, as I see it: you can live For it, Against it, or With it.
First, you can live For it as a committed gay person, as a sexually active person in or outside of an on-going relationship. Call it The Gay Option. The loving God we know does not want this option for us. I don't believe that you can have assurance that choosing that option will work together for your ultimate good.
But I'm not going to make the assumption that you are not thinking about or caught up in the Gay option. You may very well have someone in your life who you love, or so tired of battling and failing with your sexual desires, that you are seriously thinking of living as a gay person.
So in case you are, or considering it, or are at a very confused and uncertain place, then I pray that the Lord speaks to your heart about what He desires for you. So, one option is that you can live for it!
Secondly, you can live Against it; that is, you can continue fighting with it; trying to deny, repress, suppress, segregate it, or dissociate yourself from it as best you can, experiencing repeated failure and sin. Call it The Conflicted Option.
The loving God we know does not want this option for us. He does not want us to live in constant turmoil and confusion. It's psychologically unhealthy and dysfunctional. That kind of option cannot work together for your good. Most people who come to counseling are in this place with their SSA.
They know they don't want the gay option, but they have no peace in their life. They feel compulsively drawn to good looking same sex people; they can't stop compulsive sexual behavior. Their wounded selves are hurting so much, they are desparate for love and intimacy in what ever form they can get it.
I know a guy who is active in church ministry, respected and popular by the youth he works with, but constantly falling into sin with another man. He feels like a hypocrite, can't tolerate living a deception, seriously considering chucking the whole church thing and living as an openly gay person. I thought I could see the virtual tears on the email he sent me. That's the Conflicted state!
Or, thirdly, you can find a way to live With it in some mature, emotionally healthy, morally responsible, sexually chaste, and spiritually wholesome way which is compatible with your Christian values, Catholic faith, and biblical faithfulness. Call it The Resolution Option. This is what God wants for His faithful followers; for His children, and we can be sure it's this option which works together for your ultimate good.
In this message I want to explore with you what it means for a Christian to live With Same Sex Attraction; to pursue that Resolution Option; to allow God to work all things together for your good. St Paul knew the truth of this verse – Romans 8:28 - not by logic and reasoning, but by the conviction of inner experience that comes from seeing God work in his life and circumstances when he exercised faith and trust and love for God in Jesus Christ.
